How to Unlock the HTC Touch 3G

If you purchased your HTC Touch 3G directly from your wireless provider, chances are it's locked and can only be used with that provider's network. Most carriers participate in this practice to discourage you from leaving, but with the help of a unique unlock code you can use your phone with any SIM card. Your carrier may provide you with this code free of charge. If you have difficulty obtaining the code from your provider, use a phone unlocking service to obtain the code.

Things You'll Need

  • Unlock code
  • Unrecognized SIM card (from a different carrier)

Instructions

1
Contact your carrier or use an unlocking service to obtain your code. Unlocking services need your phone's IMEI number to locate the code for your Touch 3G. Press "*#06#" on your phone's dial pad to show the IMEI on the screen, or look on the sticker beneath the battery. See the Resources section for links to unlocking sites.

2
Power your Touch 3G off. Remove the back cover and slide out your old SIM card (if applicable). Insert the unrecognized SIM into the SIM card slot with the metal contacts facing down. Replace the back cover.

3
Power the phone on. "Enter Code" will be displayed on the screen. Use the dial pad to type in the unlock code you obtained previously.

Tips & Warnings

Most unlocking sites charge a nominal fee for their services. Always make sure the checkout area is secure before entering your personal information.
