How to Repair XP on Parallels

Macintosh users have two options when it comes to running Windows on their computers. The first is the Mac's built-in emulator called Boot Camp. The second is a piece of software called Parallels. While Boot Camp requires booting windows at the computer's startup, Parallels allows a user to run Windows as if it were just another program on the Mac.
When Windows needs to be repaired on a PC, it's as simple as using a recovery CD. But, when it involves Parallels, the process is a little more involved.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Parallels CD/DVD Windows XP installation CD

1
Start Parallels by clicking the logo on your dock or going into your Applications folder and double-clicking the icon.

2
Open the virtual machine configuration panel in the software. In that window, click the CD/DVD-ROM "Options" dialog button.

3
Find the Emulation function. If it is not already, set it to "Use CD/DVD-ROM."

4
Open the "Options" menu. This is located on the Configuration Editor on the left side. In the Options Menu, select the "Booting" tab. Under Boot Sequence, change the setting to CD-ROM > Hard Disk > Floppy. Click the "OK" button.

5
Insert your Windows XP installation disc and start the virtual machine. Windows will automatically prompt you to "Press any key to boot from CD." Using your mouse, click on the virtual machine window and press any key on your keyboard.

6
Wait for Windows Setup to load completely, then press the Return key.

7
Review the Windows EULA (End-User Licensing Agreement) and accept it by pressing "F8." If you are using a MacBook, press the Function key (Fn) and F8 at the same time. This will prompt Windows to find your current installation.

8
Wait for the options window to appear. On that window, select "Repair" and "Okay." This will begin your Windows XP repair.
