How to Unbrick an XBox

The Xbox 360 has a hard drive that can be modified for user interaction in a way that is not set up or approved of by Microsoft, who makes the video game console. This "flashing" of the hard drive, if done incorrectly, can cause it to cease functioning and become "bricked," which is to say it renders the video game console unworkable. Here is what can be done to return the Xbox 360 to its normal, unmodified, "unbricked" state.

Instruction

Things You'll Need

  •  iprep 101
  •  USB thumb drive

Unbricking the Xbox 360

1
Download the iprep 101 software to the PC. On a USB thumb drive which is attached to the PC, use iprep 101 to make a boot flash.

2
From "My Computer," open the bootable USB flash drive and look for the Backup Folder. Click on the Backup Folder to open it. Make a new folder inside of the Backup Folder.

3
Make another folder inside of the folder that was just made (inside the Backup Folder). Name the first folder with the first seven digits of the Xbox 360's serial number. Name the innermost folder with the last five digits of the Xbox 360's serial number.

4
Put a copy of the original firmware (which will be a .bin file) inside of the innermost folder. Remove the USB thumb drive from the computer.

5
Insert the USB thumb drive into the USB port of the Xbox 360. Turn on the game console so it can boot from the USB thumb drive. When a command line appears where typing can be done, type rben or rsam xxxxxxx xxxxx (first number is the seven front digits of the serial number, second five numbers the last set of the serial number). Follow the prompts on the screen to enable the hard drive for normal use with the Xbox 360.

Tips & Warnings

"Modding" or otherwise physically altering an Xbox 360 will void the warranty and disable the option of taking it to Microsoft or an authorized dealer for a repair. This must be taken into consideration before any kind of alterations are performed.
