How to Repair the Volume on a Mac Mini

Repairing the volume on your Mac Mini adjusts permissions on the hard drive. This allows new programs and applications that are added to the Mac Mini to run faster and without error. Repairing hard drive volumes is extremely simple to do and only requires a couple of steps to complete.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • OS X install disc

1
Get your Mac Mini's install disk. When you first purchased your Mac Mini, you will have noticed that it came with a small box labeled "Designed by Apple in California." Inside the box was your user guide, everything Mac, and your documentation and install disks. Get the disk that is labeled "Mac Mini Install Disc 1."

2
Boot from the install disc. Insert the "Mac Mini Install Disc 1" into the combo drive or super drive of your Mac Mini. Wait for the disc to load up completely and restart your computer. Immediately after you hear the chime that sounds when you first boot up your Mac Mini, hold down the "C" button on the keyboard. You may release the "C" button after you see the Apple logo with the rotating wheel on the screen.

3
Enter the disk utility. Click the "Next" button on the first window that you are presented with. Wait for the next screen to load. Click the "Utilities" text located on the top navigation bar of the screen. This activates a drop-down menu. From the drop-down menu, select "Disk utility option."

4
Repair the Volume. From within the disk utility home screen, select your Mac Mini's hard drive from the drive list. This opens up the "First Aid," "Erase," "Partition," "RAID," and "Restore" tabs. From the "First Aid" tab, click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. Wait for the permissions repair to complete. This can take up to 10 minutes.

5
Revert back to a normal boot. Click the "Disk Utility" text in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select "Quit disk utility." Click the Apple logo in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select "Restart." If you do not have this option on your version of Mac Mini Install Disk, you can always hold down the power button to power off the Mac Mini. Wait for the computer to restart.
