How to Repair the Keyboard on a Mac Laptop


In the lifespan of a MacBook, daily wear and excessive transportation may increase the amount of damage to the body and keyboard. This is especially true with heavy use. Over time, one may find the keyboard wearing out or even missing keys. This is when installing a new keyboard to extend the lifespan of your MacBook is ideal. Replacing the keyboard of an Apple MacBook may seem intimidating at first, however, installing a MacBook laptop keyboard is a task that can be done within an afternoon and once completed, will make every day computing tasks much easier.

Find out the model of your laptop to get the correct keys relative to your MacBook model. For example, older uni-body models has aluminum keys which do not contain spaces. The new MacBook has a black keyboard and to provide for the thinner MacBook body, is recess into the laptop case. Also, each model contains a different type of clip under the keys called scissor mechanisms. A scissor mechanism is what allows a key to be pressed and springs back up. Take this in consideration while researching keyboards online.

Find a website that sells keyboards. Search for a reliable retailer to purchase genuine apple keyboards (See resources). Select your model number, then select the compatible keyboard.

Organize the keys and replacement scissor mechanism pieces in a small tray before working on the keyboard. Make sure all of the keys are present. Organizing the keys before hand, provides for a quicker installation.

Remove all the keys from the keyboard. They keys are simply snapped into place. Pull the individual key upwards with small tweezers until the key unsnaps from the scissor mechanism. Carefully remove making sure that the scissor mechanism is still intact on the key sensor. Most keys come with replacement scissor mechanisms if the case is that the original mechanisms are not intact. The scissor must hook into the old supports on the keyboard base.

Replace the keyboard by taking each key and firmly snapping it onto the hook on the scissor mechanism until it snaps into place. Try using the keyboard once all of the keys make sure all keeps are properly installed. Make sure the keys align properly and no gaps are present. This will ensure typing will be a smooth and intuitive experience.
