How to Get Your Wii Chipped

The Nintendo Wii is a popular gaming console, but its operating system limits what you can do on the system. For instance, if you happen to scratch a game, you wouldn't be able to play a backup disc because the console would not read it. As a result, some owners modify their Wii using a special computer chip purchased from a game console modification store. You can add a "chip" to your Nintendo Wii, but the modification will require opening the Wii and voiding the warranty.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  •  Towel
  •  Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  •  Flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver
  •  Torx screwdriver

1
Remove all of the cables attached to the Wii. Remove the SD memory card from the memory slot.

2
Place the towel down on a table. Place the Wii down on the table vertically with the ventilation grill facing up.

3
Remove the screw on the battery compartment using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the battery compartment lid with your fingers.

4
Remove the pads from around the battery compartment and the ventilation grill using the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver. Scratch off the sticker using the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver to reveal a screw.

5
Remove the screw revealed beneath the sticker with the Torx screwdriver. Remove the screws revealed under the pads that have been removed using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

6
Turn the Wii over. Open the two compartment doors. Wiggle the two compartment doors loose from their hinges using your fingers. Remove the two compartment doors.

7
Place the Wii down horizontally on the towel with the ventilation grill facing away from you and with the pads on the top.

8
Remove the two pads using the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver. Scratch off the two stickers with the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver.

9
Remove the screws revealed under the pads and the stickers with the Torx screwdriver.

10
Turn the Wii over and place it down horizontally with the black plastic insert facing toward you.

11
Remove the three screws from around and next to the black plastic insert using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the black plastic insert with your fingers.

12
Remove the screws that were under the black DVD plastic insert with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

13
Place the Wii vertically with the DVD slot facing upward. Pull the faceplate off the Wii using your fingers.

14
Remove the wire attached to the faceplate from a connector inside of the Wii using tweezers.

15
Hold each side of the Wii with your hands. Pull the two halves of the Wii's case apart with your hands. Put the case with the metal plate in it down on the towel.

16
Pull the metal plate off the Wii using your hands. Remove the four screws from around the DVD drive using the Phillips screwdriver.

17
Lift the DVD drive up with your left hand. Pull out the ribbon connector from its back using the fingers of your right hand (reverse this for "lefties").

18
Plug the ribbon connector attached to the computer chip into the connector on the back of the DVD drive.

19
Plug the ribbon connector of the Wii into the connection on the computer chip.

20
Reverse the disassembly process to put the Wii back together.

Tips & Warnings

Use the Nintendo Wii guide provided by the Wii modification chip company to determine the version of your Wii because this will determine the type of computer chip to purchase.
