How to Fix the Sound on a Mac Computer

There are a lot of reasons that the sound won't work on your Mac. If you've checked to make sure your system sound is on, and you still are not getting any sound, the chances are you have a bad or disconnected sound chip. If this is the case, you have a couple of options. You could spends a bunch of time digging around in the computer for the right card or disconnected circuit board and risk messing up some other vital piece of hardware in the process, or you can do what this article recommends: buy an iMic.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Mac
  • Computer Speakers
  • iMic

1
Go to the Apple Store and buy an iMic. If you don't have an Apple Store in your area, you can purchase an iMic online at either the Apple website or at griffintechnology.com.

2
Plug your iMic in to your computer's USB port. You'll see on the iMic that there are two different types of standard jacks. One is for sound input, the other for output. Make sure you have the iMic switched to the sound output.

3
Hook up your speakers to the sound output jack. The idea behind it is that the iMic actually reroutes the computer's sound, skipping the need for a sound card. The sound should now play out of your speakers. If you are still having problems, go into the sound icon in your system preferences.
