How to Downgrade to PS3 Slim Using iPhone

The process of jailbreaking your PlayStation 3 console first requires that you downgrade it to an operating system released before the system update 3.55 patch. Downgrading the PS3 with your iPhone requires that you have a jailbroken iPhone with OpeniBoot and PSFreedom installed on it. As with any jailbreaking or downgrading technique, the software used to perform the downgrade is neither created nor supported by Sony or Apple.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  •  Jailbroken iPhone 2G/3G
  •  Linux Operating System
  •  SFTP Client
  •  OpeniBoot
  •  PSFreedom

Installing OpeniBoot to your iPhone

1
Download the OpeniBoot installer from Geeknizer.com and save it to your computer. Create a folder on your desktop labeled "OpeniBoot" and extract the files from the installer into that folder.

2
Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable.

3
Open your SFTP client and transfer the contents from the "Prebuilt" directory inside of your "OpeniBoot" folder into the "/private/var" directory on your iPhone. SFTP clients can include Filezilla or Winscp.

4
Disconnect your iPhone and turn it off by pressing and holding the "Power" button. Press and hold the "Home" button and connect your iPhone to your computer. Continue holding down the "Home" button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

5
Open the "OpeniBoot" folder and select the "iDroid" from the "Utils" directory. Copy “Loadibec“, “Openiboot.img3″ and “Oibc” to your home folder. Copy "Openiboot.img3” to the “Utils” directory.

6
Press and hold "Alt-F2" on your keyboard and type "gnome-terminal" to launch the terminal. Type "sudo ./loadibec openiboot.img3" into the terminal. This will launch the OpeniBoot screen on your iPhone.

7
Press the "Lock" button on your iPhone and select the "OpeniBoot" console then press the "Home" button. Type "sudo ./oibc" into the terminal on your computer. The terminal will display the same text shown on your iPhone. Type "Install" to install OpeniBoot to your iPhone. Type "Reboot" when the message "Refreshed Image List" appears on your phone. Once OpeniBoot is installed you will be given the option to choose which operating system you want to use each time you turn on your phone.

Install PSFreedom and Downgrade your PS3

1
Download PSFreedom for iPhone 2G and 3G from Ps3.dashhacks.com and save the file to your desktop.

2
Turn on your iPhone and select the "Apple" operating system, then connect it to your computer.

3
Launch your SFTP client and navigate to the "Private/var" folder. Copy the files within the "PSFreedom" holder into "Private/var." Right-click on each file and select "File permissions." Change the permissions on both files to "777."

4
Disconnect your iPhone and turn it off. Disconnect all devices connected to your PS3 console and unplug it from the electrical outlet.

5
Connect your iPhone to the PS3 and turn it on. Select the "Android" operating system and plug your PS3 back into the electrical outlet while the "Android" operating system is loading on your iPhone.

6
Press the "Power" button on your PS3 console quickly followed by the "Eject" button when you see the penguin icon appear on your iPhone while loading the "Android" operating system. If installed correctly, your PS3 will take several minutes to turn on. Wait for the console to turn on and agree to the terms and conditions to downgrade your console.

Tips & Warnings
Like jailbreaking, downgrading your PS3 console can irreversibly damage your PS3 console and iPhone.

If you choose to jailbreak your PS3 console or iPhone, you may void the warranty on your devices.
