How to Fix a Mac G3 That Won't Reboot

If a Mac G3 doesn't reboot, the problem can usually be resolved easily. Because the G3 runs both the OS9 and OSX operating systems, the computer may not have received instructions on what system to start up in. The problem can also arise when the parameter random access memory (PRAM) becomes corrupted and needs to be reset. If the computer is a PowerBook or iBook, the power management unit (PMU)

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • OSX system install disk
  • Troubleshooting the Startup Disk

1
Power the computer off, wait five seconds and push the power button again. If you see a flashing question mark, wait to see if the computer comes on after a brief delay. If it comes on, choose the correct startup disk in the Startup Disk preferences (OSX) or the Startup Disk control panel (System 9).

2
Turn off the power and disconnect the mouse and keyboard if the computer doesn't start. Try starting up again.

3
Insert the Mac OSX Install or Restore disk if the computer still doesn't boot up. Start up the computer while you hold down the "C" key. Choose "Disk Utility" from the Apple menu but don't click "Continue". Click the "First Aid" tab and then click "Repair Disk." After the repair is complete, try restarting the computer from the OSX hard disk.

Resetting the PMU

1
Hold down the Option-Command-Escape keys to force the computer to shut down if it has stopped responding.

2
Press the Control-Command-Power keys to restart.

3
Hold the power button down for 10 seconds if the computer is still unresponsive.

4
Remove the battery and/or press the reset button. Consult the Apple website for the location of this button because it varies among different G3 models. Replace the battery and press the power on button.

Tips & Warnings

Computers with System 9 and OSX installed can be forced to start up in OSX by pressing and holding the "X" key during startup.
