How to Remove Windows Security Center Detected Spyware Alert

If your computer is alerting you to potential spyware threats, it is probably for a good reason. Before disabling the alerts, run your system through the necessary scans to remove any potential threats. After removing the spyware, the alerts may cease. If you want to completely disable any future alerts from Microsoft's built-in security system and pass off the duties to other antivirus applications, install those first or risk leaving your computer vulnerable.

Instructions

  1. Download and install the free spyware removal application Ad-Aware. Launch the program and run a Full System Scan. Delete or Quarantine any detected spyware.
  2. Download and install the free antivirus software from AVG. Launch the program and run a Full Scan of your hard drive. Delete any malicious software detected.
  3. Disable Windows Security Center alerts. Navigate to the Security Center via the Control Panel. Select "Resources," then "Change the Way Security Center Alerts Me."
  4. Uncheck all the boxes in the Alert Settings section and select "OK."
  5. Optionally, you can completely disable Windows Security Center and allow Ad-Aware and AVG Free to handle your virus and spyware protection needs. To do this, navigate to the Administrator Tools from the Control Panel. Double-click "Services" and then "Security Center." This will bring up the Properties dialog box. Under the General tab, locate Startup Type and change the drop-down menu to "Disabled." Select "Stop" under Service Status and select "OK."

Tips & Warnings

Additionally, you can use SpyBot Search & Destroy for spyware protection or any of the offerings from security experts Norton and McAfee.

Do not disable your Windows Security Center if you do not already have additional security software installed.
