How to Fix iPhone OS 4 Google Sync

When upgrading from iOS 3 to iOS 4 for the iPhone, your Google Sync account may behave erratically by refusing to update your contacts, calendar or mail. This problem wrecks havoc on your Gmail account, as new or updated information from Google doesn't push to the iPhone or updates slowly. With the firmware update available for the iPhone, Apple corrected the error and it is available free through the iTunes program. Once updated, the information on the iPhone is replaced with the current information in your Google account to keep both the device and the account synchronized.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • iTunes 10.2 or later
  • iPhone USB cable

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer by inserting the cable into the USB cable port on both devices.
  2. Open the iTunes program. Click the iPhone's name in iTunes, and click "Check for Update" in the iTunes window. Click "Download and Install" and click "Next" once the iOS firmware installer window opens. Wait for the iPhone's firmware to update, and click the eject button next to the iPhone's name in the side menu when it is complete.
  3. Remove the cable from the iPhone. Touch "Settings," "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and "Gmail" on your iPhone. Tap "Delete Account" and "Delete from My iPhone" to remove your Google Gmail account from the iPhone.
  4. Plug the USB cable back into the iPhone, and click "Info" in iTunes. Click the check box next to "Sync Contacts," "Sync Calendar" and "Sync Mail." Click Google as the default account for the contacts, calendars and mail to re-add the account to the iPhone.
  5. Click "Apply" at the bottom of iTunes to synchronize the account to the iPhone. Click "Controls" and "Eject" to remove the iPhone.
