How to Unlock Your iPhone for Free

The Apple iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market, thanks to its sleek design and extensible operating system. As of 2010, the iPhone was available only to AT&T customers, leaving users of other carriers out of the picture. It is possible to unlock the iPhone for usage with other carriers, but it's first necessary to "jailbreak" the phone. Jailbreaking is the process of opening the iPhone operating system to manual configurations that are not explicitly supported or approved by Apple. Once this is done, the device can be unlocked and virtually any mobile phone SIM card can be used.

Things You Should Know First:
- iPhone 3G or 4G with iOS firmware 4.0.1 or older

Jailbreak
  1. Tap "Safari" to launch the iPhone Web browser.
  2. Navigate to jailbreakme.com
  3. Swipe the "Slide to Jailbreak" slider to download and install the JailbreakMe software to your iPhone.
Unlock
  1. Tap "Settings."
  2. Tap "Network."
  3. Swipe "Enable 3G" to "Off."
  4. Return to the home screen and tap "Cydia."
  5. Tap "Manage."
  6. Tap "Sources."
  7. Tap "Edit" and then "Add."
  8. Type "repo666.ultrasn0w.com" then tap "Add Source." Tap "Done."
  9. Tap the search box at the top of the screen in Cydia and type "ultrasn0w" then tap the application icon.
  10. Click "Install" and then "Confirm."
Tips & Warnings

As of September 2010, the iOS has been updated to 4.1, which greatly restricts the exploits used to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone. It is recommended that iOS not be updated beyond 4.0.1 if you wish to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone.

Unlocking your iPhone can void your warranty

How to Install TinyUmbrella on an iPad 4.2.1

TinyUmbrella is an application that allows you to save your iPad's baseband so that you can upgrade the firmware on your iPad device without also upgrading your iPad's baseband. Instructions
  1. Go to the TinyUmbrella home page on your PC or Mac computer.
  2. Click the "TInyUmbrella" download link for your PC or Mac computer from the right side of the TinyUmbrella home page. Confirm that you want to download and install the software to your computer.
  3. Double-click the TinyUmbrella icon on your computer to open the application.
  4. Connect your iPad 4.2.1 to your computer using the iPad data cable
  5. Click the "Start TSS Server" button.
  6. Click the "Save SHSH" button to sync the TinyUmbrella application with your iPad device. TinyUmbrella will install on your iPad device and create a backup of your device's baseband on your computer.
Tips & Warnings:
Jailbreaking your iPad will void the manufacturer's warranty.

How to Jailbreak an iPod Touch 4.2.1

When you jailbreak an iPod touch, the device is unlocked from iTunes. Once unlocked you can download software from third-party developers through the independent Cydia app store, which is installed as part of the jailbreaking process. An iPod touch running version 4.2.1 of the iOS operating system can be jailbroken quickly, safely and securely using the Jailbreakme website.

Instructions

  1. Open the JailbreakMe website on your iPod touch by launching the Safari Web browser and typing "http://www.jailbreakme.com" into the address bar.
  2. Tap the blue "Free" button in the upper right corner of the Cydia app store listing displayed on the JailbreakMe website.
  3. Tap the button again when it turns green and the text changes to "Install." Cydia is downloaded to your iPod touch, initiating the jailbreaking process.
  4. Launch Cydia once downloading has completed by tapping its icon on the Home screen. A dialog box will appear, requesting you upgrade to the latest version of Cydia.
  5. Tap the "Complete Upgrade" button to download the latest Cydia installation. The iPod touch will restart after the upgrade has finished to complete the jailbreaking process.

Tips & Warnings
  • The JailbreakMe method of jailbreaking your iPod touch does not require you to reset your device, so all games, apps and multimedia content is retained without having to sync with your computer after completion.
  • Performing a full backup and synchronization through iTunes before jailbreaking is recommended, in case you decide to reverse the jailbreak in the future.
  • f you restore or update your iPod touch through iTunes, its jailbroken status will be lost. However, you can still sync with iTunes as normal without affecting the jailbreak.

How to Jailbreak Your iOS 5 Device

Want to jailbreak an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad running iOS 5? Here's how to do so with Redsn0w.
How to Jailbreak Your iOS 5 DeviceThe iPhone Dev-Team has done it again: iOS 5 has been out for only a week or so, but the group has already come up with a tethered jailbreak for devices running Apple's latest software. Here's how to jailbreak your iOS 5 device using the iPhone Dev-Team's Redsn0w tool.
Jailbreaking an iPhone allows users to gain root access to the device, as well as to install unauthorized applications. You might not know that Apple has a stringent App Store policy, and that it routinely rejects apps for a number of reasons, including smuttiness and other "content issues." Jailbreaking your iPhone will let you download unauthorized content from Cydia, which is the jailbroken equivalent of the App Store (don't worry--you'll still be able to use the real App Store).
For the first time, users do not need to manually supply their device's IPSW file. What this means for you is that the new Redsn0w jailbreak is extremely quick and easy to perform on any iOS 5 device (minus the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S). The Dev-Team is working on an untethered jailbreak, but for now the tethered version is all that's available
